The majority of Australians are not convinced that fast food chains such as McDonalds are making a genuine attempt to promote healthy eating habits with their “healthier choice” menu choices, according to a new poll.

76% Of Pollsters Are Unconvinced

The Crosby/Textor poll of 800 people across Australia found that 24 per cent of adults thought the healthy menu options were a genuine attempt by fast food outlets to improve customers’ eating habits.

Patrons Are Not Convinced Of The Genuiness Of Major Food Outlet's Attempts To Provide Healhier Menu Options

“The results show that people are increasingly looking for proof that fast food corporations have changed,” said joint managing director of Crosby/Textor Mark Textor.

“It takes much more these days to convince them that after decades of business as usual, fast food makers really have moved on to reflect community concern about what we and our children are eating.”

The lack of genuineness and real motives on the part of fast food outlets will impact on the life, wellness and obesity of Australian children.

Food Outlets More Profit-Focused Than Health Focused

The general feeling is that outlets are more concerned about their bottom line profits than propagating markedly healthier food.

The same poll found that 40 per cent of 18-34 year olds admitted to eating unhealthy takeaway foods in the past week, compared to just 24 per cent for the adult population as a whole.

The survey was carried out between March 27 and April 1.
